Why Diamond Grinding is the Secret to a Long-Lasting Epoxy Floor

In the military, success is built on discipline and preparation. Whether maintaining multi-million dollar equipment or planning a complex logistics move, we learned one thing early on: You never rush the setup.

At MACH ONE® Epoxy Floors, we bring that same “do it right the first time” mentality to your home or business. We don’t just coat concrete. We engineer a surface that lasts for years to come, and one of the most essential steps in that process is industrial diamond grinding.

What is Diamond Grinding and Do I Really Need to Do It?

If you’re researching epoxy flooring installs, you’ve likely come across the term ‘diamond grinding.’ Simply put, diamond grinding uses industrial machines equipped with diamond-segmented blades to mechanically shave the top layer of your concrete.

But do you really need to do it? If you want a floor that lasts longer than a single season, the answer is a definitive YES!

Concrete looks solid, but it’s actually a porous, sponge-like material. Over time, those pores get clogged with laitance (a powdery layer of cement particles), old sealers, oil, and dirt. If you apply epoxy over that, it’s like trying to tape two pieces of paper together when one is covered in dust; the tape won’t stick.

Why Acid Washing Before Epoxy Installation Often Fails

Many big box store epoxy kits suggest etching your floor with an acid solution. While this sounds convenient and easy enough to do yourself, it’s rarely enough for a long-term bond.

Acid washing is a topical treatment. The process can’t remove old sealers, deep oil stains, or laitance. If you apply epoxy coatings to a floor that hasn’t been mechanically ground, the coating isn’t actually sticking to the concrete. Rather, it’s sticking to the contaminants on top of it.

The result is often hot tire pick-up, where your tires peel the epoxy off the floor when you back out of the garage. At MACH ONE®, we don’t settle for good enough.

The MACH ONE® Advantage: Warrior Equipment

At MACH ONE®, our concrete contractors don’t show up with a rental sander. We use the heavy-duty power of Warrior Equipment. These machines are industrial-grade, 4-head planetary grinders (like the Warrior Samson or Leonidas) designed to transform a slab of concrete into a perfect canvas for epoxy.

Why We Use Industrial Concrete Grinders and Equipment

  • To get a lifetime bond, concrete needs a specific texture, known in the industry as a Concrete Surface Profile (CSP). Our Warrior grinders achieve a CSP 2 or 3, which is a texture similar to 80-grit sandpaper. This texture allows the epoxy to root itself deep into the pores of the slab.
  • Our grinders don’t just scratch the surface. They level out high spots and ridges, creating a smoother finish.
  • In addition to using industrial concrete grinders, we also use HEPA dust extractors. These industry-grade vacs with HEPA filters clean up any dust particles left behind in your garage.
  • We take pride in partnering with Warrior Equipment because they are an American company that shares our commitment to the Veteran community.

A Foundation You Can Trust Requires Grinding

You have choices when it comes to your flooring project. You can go with a contractor who cuts corners with acid washing prep, or you can choose a team that treats your floor with the discipline it deserves.

At MACH ONE® Epoxy Floors, we use the best equipment in the industry to ensure your floor stands the test of time. We’re not just installing epoxy flooring. We’re honoring a commitment to quality. Find a location near you to request a quote today and learn more about our process!
